The Homesteader’s of Five Acres to Freedom
Hey there! Welcome to Five Acres to Freedom! We're just your average couple with a deep-rooted passion for homesteading and living close to nature. Over the last several years, we've been working hard to create a self-sufficient lifestyle on our little piece of land in Poland, Maine. It's been an amazing adventure full of learning experiences, challenges, and cherished moments that we're excited to share with you.
Our cozy homestead is nestled on just over five acres of mostly wooded land, which has taught us a thing or two about determination and resourcefulness. We've spent years clearing out trees, nurturing our sandy soil with compost and chicken manure, and making space for gardening and raising animals. Every step of the way, we've found great satisfaction in the progress we've made.
Throughout the last several years, we've been super proud of some milestones we've achieved:
Building a secure and comfy chicken coop and run, complete with fencing to keep our birds safe from predators
Setting up an automatic watering system for our poultry that uses rainwater, helping us be more eco-friendly
Creating a cozy duck house for our quacking buddies
Growing a sustainable long-term food system by planting blackberries, strawberries, grapes, and apple trees
Constructing raised beds to grow a variety of veggies and herbs to spice up our meals
Constantly learning from our experiences and tweaking our homestead to better suit our needs and the needs of our animals
We'll be the first to admit we're no experts. We're still learning, just like you, and we want to share our experiences, both the good and the bad, as we continue to grow in this exciting journey. Our goal is to support and inspire others to embrace a more sustainable lifestyle and discover the beauty of homesteading.
